Masamune — among the most recognized names in the history of Japanese swordsmithing. The forge that carries his name still stands in Kamakura today, its craft passed down without interruption for eight centuries. Over two hours, guests watch that lineage at work through the hands of its 24th-generation smith — less a tourist activity than a rare look at a trade still very much alive.
01｜Eight Centuries, an Unbroken Line

The forge carrying Masamune's name traces its lineage back to the era of the Kamakura shogunate. Stepping inside, tools passed down across generations and the marks of a well-used furnace speak to that history more clearly than any number could. The weight of the lineage comes through less in "24th generation" than in the air of the room itself.
02｜Steel Struck, Folded, and Shaped

Steel drawn from the furnace glows a bright orange. Guests watch, close at hand, as it's struck again and again, folded, and gradually worked into the shape of a blade. The ring of the hammer, the heat off the fire, and the smith's unhesitating movements communicate something that needs no translation.
03｜The Etiquette of Viewing a Blade, and a Bowl of Tea

The visit closes with a brief lesson in the etiquette of viewing a blade — never pointing the edge toward another person, tilting it to the light to trace its hamon. It's a reminder that this is not simply an object of beauty, but one that calls for a certain respect in how it's handled. The day ends with tea and seasonal sweets by the forge, the warmth of the fire still lingering.
What the tour handles for you
The forging demonstration, guidance on blade-viewing etiquette, and tea and seasonal sweets at the workshop are all included. The experience runs for a minimum of 2 and maximum of 6 guests, and bookings should be made at least 75 days in advance.
