In Shonan, discover the traditional craft of Japanese candle-making through an intimate workshop led by local candle artisan Meria. Working with natural materials sourced from the region, you will shape your own Japanese candle entirely by hand.

Limited to four guests, the experience takes place in a quiet setting in Kamakura or Fujisawa — a chance to slow down, work with your hands, and experience a different rhythm of Japan.

Your finished candle is yours to take home, carrying with it the memory of your time in Shonan.

Shonan Japanese Candles

Inspired by the quiet beauty of the Shonan coast, Shonan Japanese Candles bring together local materials and a traditional Japanese craft.

Each candle is made by hand from plant-based mokurō wax, derived from the Japanese wax tree, with a natural wick made from washi and rush. As the candle burns, the wax is drawn into the wick and gradually disappears into the flame, leaving very little residue.

The natural materials allow the candle to return gently to the environment. Its larger, steady flame has long been valued in Japanese temples and tea rooms.

Meet Meria

Based in Fujisawa, Meria creates Shonan Japanese Candles using natural materials from local farmers and producers.

From developing each color to shaping and finishing every candle, she works entirely by hand, choosing a slower process over mass production. Her workshops offer a space to become absorbed in the simple act of making — where time seems to slow, and the hands take over.
