Kamakura has preserved its temples for 850 years — and its stillness for just as long.
This tour is built around that stillness: not a rapid checklist of sights, but an unhurried journey through three of Kamakura's Five Great Zen Temples. Your guide brings their history to life while giving you time to slow down and absorb each place.
The Five Mountains, or Kamakura Gozan , are five of the city's most important Rinzai Zen temples, whose foundations were laid during the Kamakura shogunate and later ranked among the highest in the temple hierarchy under the Muromachi shogunate: Kencho-ji, Engaku-ji, Jufuku-ji, Jochi-ji, and Jomyo-ji.
On this journey, experience a brief zazen meditation at Engaku-ji, stroll through the seasonal grounds of Jochi-ji, and savor matcha overlooking the dry landscape Zen garden at Jomyo-ji. The morning concludes with a relaxed lunch tailored to your taste.
Everything is arranged in advance. All you need to bring is a willingness to slow down.
For full-day tours, the afternoon itinerary following lunch is fully customized to your preferences.
